These digital scans are not only faster and cleaner, but also more accurate, helping us create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific orthodontic goals. iTero even allows us to show you a simulation of your potential post-treatment smile—before you even begin!
Why Accuracy Matters
For Invisalign patients, an accurate impression is critical to ensuring successful treatment. The difference between an iTero scan and a traditional impression is like watching HDTV versus standard definition—you’ll see the details that matter.
How iTero Works
Using a small, non-invasive handheld wand, we capture a digital, 3D image of your teeth. You can breathe, swallow, and even pause during the scan if needed—comfort and convenience come first. Redoing impressions is rarely necessary, thanks to iTero’s precision. You’ll even be able to watch your scan in real time on the screen as we move the wand.
Once complete, your scan is sent electronically to the Invisalign lab and uploaded to the Invisalign ClinCheck® system—usually by the next day. This 3D model is used for all stages of treatment, including the Invisalign Outcome Simulator, which shows you what your new smile could look like once treatment is complete.

Using this technology, we will take three-dimensional (3-D) digital images, or impressions, of your teeth and bite. This digital impression system replaces messy and sometimes inaccurate traditional putty impressions. No bulky trays or sticky putty needed! These impressions will help us formulate a personalized treatment plan that best meets your specific orthodontic needs and desires. We can also use iTero to show you how your teeth may look following Invisalign treatment.
For patients who are candidates for Invisalign aligners, an accurate impression is essential for effective treatment planning and orthodontic care. The accuracy and detail of the iTero scan vs a putty impression are comparable to watching HDTV over standard definition TV.
How iTero Works
The iTero handheld wand takes a digital, 3D image of your prepared teeth, stopping as needed. The wand is non-invasive and you can breathe and swallow as needed during the procedure. If you need to move or adjust, you can do so – the accuracy of the handheld wand is first-rate. Needing to “re-do” impressions is rare. Plus, you can look at the iTero 3D image on the screen in real-time as the orthodontist moves the wand!
Instead of shipping impressions to the lab to be scanned, the digital image of your teeth is sent electronically to the lab and is available in the Invisalign Clincheck system the very next day. This 3D model of your mouth can be used with all Invisalign services – including the Invisalign Outcome Simulator, which shows what your new smile might look like after treatment is completed.
